Do you have a beautiful hardwood staircase but, they're just dull and need some life? R and S Flooring can help!
First, assess the state of your hardwood stairs. You or a professional floor refinisher like R and S Flooring can sand and refinish it to give it new life. Or, if there is no hope, a new hardwood staircase can be installed and stained to match the finish of your floors.
Either way, your efforts will pay off. A hardwood staircase, like hardwood flooring, adds character, beauty, and resale value to any home.
Are your floors squeaky? Ugh. I hate when stairs squeak!!!! If you're already going to be giving your stairs a facelift, start by checking for any needed repairs. Loose or rubbing parts often cause squeaks, a common problem. Stop the squeak by nailing or screwing down a part that has separated or by inserting a wedge underneath it.
Refinishing hardwood requires special equipment and a lot of patience. While you can do it by yourself, it's usually recommending hiring a professional like R & S Flooring. If you decide to do it yourself, rent a floor edger-sanding machine and follow these instructions:
• Run the sander over the steps. For rough or painted boards, start with 20- or 30-grit sandpaper, and then proceed with 50-grit and finally 90-grit.
• Start with 36-grit paper for varnished floors.
• Next, use a hand scraper on the spots the sander missed and, if desired, hand sand with fine paper to remove small scratches.
• Vacuum to remove the dust.
• Stain with a clear finish or one custom-blended to match your floors.
• For a final protective glaze, top that with three coats of polyurethane, which is available with a water or oil base.
*Each coat of oil-based polyurethane must dry overnight. Water-based sealers usually dry within a couple of hours.
After you've gone through all of this work, you want to KEEP them looking new, right? To keep stairs free of dust, wipe with a cloth or use a dust mop or hand-vacuum. One way to remove caked-on grime from a handrail is to lightly rub with very fine screen sandpaper and top with a new coat of varnish.

Weekend Flooring Ideas
Looking for an easy way to refresh tired rooms and boost the value of your home? Look down. Flooring may not be the first thing you think of when you're looking for a quick upgrade, but here are some flooring projects you can tackle yourself.
The quickest way to get new wood underfoot is to install a floating floor. Unlike traditional solid-wood strips, a floating floor isn't nailed down. Instead, the planks are either glued or snapped together. The planks go down fast, over any material—concrete, plywood, sheet vinyl, even ceramic tile. This sandwich of wood veneer glued to layers of pine or plywood looks like solid wood and is very stable. The main benefit of a floating floor is that it can be done in just one day.
Engineered wood floors are made of thin sheets of wood glued together like plywood. Solid wood is classic and can last a century, but engineered flooring offers a quicker, easier way to get a new floor, and it comes with a durable factory-applied finish.
Tired of your kitchen floor? Why not paint a checkerboard floor? A little measuring and a couple of coats of durable floor paint can add a lot of personality to a room for a small price.

I'm obsessed with this!
Tile floors are beautiful and don't require much maintenance. Tile also offers a level of customization that other floors don't. You can play with patterns and designs to suit your taste. As durable as they may be, these thin, fragile slices of ceramic do require some special care and preparation.
Epoxy coat a garage or even basement floor! Epoxy resists oil stains, beads water, and wipes clean like a kitchen counter. Color chips and custom paint colors hide annoying imperfections in the concrete. All you need for this project is a weekend to sweep the dirt out and paint the epoxy on.
If you want to redo your floors, but like me, are too nervous to do it alone, call the professionals in Nashville at R and S Flooring. We specialize in wood flooring; installing, refinishing and more! Call us today at 615-771-0084.

Refinishing your Hardwood Floors
Are you thinking about tackling the task of refinishing your hardwood floors? Before you get started on your "weekend" project, call the experts at R&S Wood Flooring. Some things are better left to the professionals!
We can handle all of your sanding and refinishing needs. We take the time to listen to you and ask the right questions so that we can suggest the best process and products for you. Have kids, pets, or health issues to consider? At R&S Flooring, we’ve got you covered.
If you are thinking about refinishing your hardwood floors in your current home, we recommend dustless sanding. Dustless sanding uses a trailer-mounted system to remove all of the dust from your home. What is this, you ask? Sanding equipment is hooked up to a vacuum, which prevents dust from accumulating in your air vents and filters. With true dustless sanding, there will be very minimal dust (if there is any dust at all!) at the end of your project! If you’re on a tight budget and can’t quite swing a trailer-mounted, another method to eliminate dust is to connect a your buffer to a shop vac. This alternative is affordable and works well for our clients who are focused on cost savings.
Choosing dustless sanding has excellent health benefits as wood dust can be harmful to inhale. If you or your children have asthma or allergies, dustless sanding is definitely the way to go. Not only is it better for your health, but the cleanup process is much easier as well!
R&S Flooring specializes in wood flooring and laminates along with refinishing floors and stairs. R&S Flooring has been in business since 1991. The showroom is located in Brentwood and we service all of Middle Tennessee including Nashville, Brentwood, Franklin and more.

Ice Dams
Have you fallen victim to the winter weather? People all over Middle Tennessee (and beyond) are finding ice dams - a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow (water) from draining off the roof. The water that backs up behind the dam can leak into your home and cause damage to walls, ceilings, insulation, and other areas.
A lot of damage. My entire condo building is damaged because of the melting snow and ice! For a “quick fix” (just to get you through until you can contact a contractor like ), take a box fan into your attic and aim it at the underside of your roof where water is actively leaking in. This dose of cold air will freeze the water and stop it from continuously melting.
Hacking away at ice dams with a hammer, chisel, or shovel is bad for your roofing—and dangerous for you. Thinking of throwing salt on it? Don’t. It will do more harm to your plantings than to the ice.
Pull off snow with a long-handled aluminum roof rake while you stand safely on the ground. A rake with wheels will instantly change the exterior temperature of your roof without damaging shingles.
You can also diminish the damage after the dam has formed with, wait for it… panty hose! Fill the leg of discarded pair of panty hose with a calcium chloride ice-melter. Lay the hose onto your roof so it crosses the ice dam and overhangs the gutter. If necessary, use a long-handled garden rake or hoe to push it into position. The calcium chloride will eventually melt through the snow and ice and create a channel for water to flow down into the gutters or off the roof.
Now, those are just quick fixes. As we all know, quick fixes aren’t always the best but sometimes necessary! For a permanent fix, you need to call a contractor right away.
If your floors were damaged, call R&S Flooring in Brentwood. We service all of Middle Tennessee and can help get your floors looking new again! 615-771-0084.
